Acrylicize Developed the concept around The Amen Break, a six-second drum solo from the 1969 song “Amen, Brother” by The Winstons, performed by drummer Gregory Coleman. It’s widely regarded as the most sampled drum break in history, forming the foundation for entire genres such as hip-hop, drum and bass, and jungle. Producers have looped, sped up, and chopped the break for decades to create countless new rhythms.

This lighting installation takes the audio waveform of the Amen Break as the basis for its form. Stretching 11 meters across the main foyer of one of Spotify’s offices in Stockholm, it’s composed of 187 individual LED batons, each varying in length and fully programmable via DMX. The piece twists through the space like a giant illuminated helix.

Amalgam developed several solutions to ensure the installation appeared as seamless as possible. Custom laser-cut tubes were commissioned so that cables could be threaded through and precisely positioned for each light. A bespoke SLS-printed component was designed to conceal additional wiring while clamping each light baton to the central steel core. This system allowed the piece to be shipped in upright, untwisted sections, while still enabling the structure to twist and lock into place once installed on-site.
